White space
White space (or negative space) is the spacing between different elements which contains nothing. The goal of white space is to help the design flow better and create unity in the layout. Usually filling up the design with different layout elements will not result in a visually appealing product. It will be too busy and the reader will not be able to focus on the main idea of the message, as shown in the example on the left. Likewise, if there is too much white space, the design can be hard to follow and boring.

However, when white space is used correctly, it can produce effective and attractive results. The picture below is a good example of a layout with an appropriate amount of white space. It contrasts well with the guitar so the guitar stands out more. Also it makes the words very easy to read. The white space makes it easy to tell that the main idea of the design is to promote a guitar. As shown by the two examples below, it is very important to remember that white space can make or break a design.
